The Gym Edinburgh City, 2-4 Waterloo Place, Waverley Gate, Edinburgh, EH1 3EG
I’ve got a new home! 🙂 In a strange case of history repeating itself, almost, I’m now at The Gym Edinburgh City! The irony’s not lost on me as it was the opening of The Gym which triggered the closure of Factory Gyms 5 years ago! Historians amongst you can read all about the closure of Factory Gyms and my move to The Scotsman Spa by clicking on the links! This time around The Scotsman Spa closed and so I simply moved beck to the other side of North Bridge again! 🙂 Last time Tom and Kyle came too. This time Scott and Sandy have come from The Scotsman. It’s all very pleasing I have to say! 🙂
I’ve been here for 3 months now but it’s taken me this long to calm down enough to put finger to keyboard and write something vaguely objective aside from how wonderful the place is! 🙂 I relocated Lazer Towers too! You can see a pic of the view on the walk to ‘work’ a bit further down. I captioned all the pics but they don’t show up on some devices it seems! 🙂
What’s it like here? Oh go on then I’ll tell you! 🙂
The Gym Edinburgh City is fantastic!
When I relocated to The Scotsman Spa Kyle and I visited several gyms – nostalgia buffs, historians and anyone with a few minutes to kill can read about our visits to The Scotsman Spa, Bannantynes, CSE and Virgin (now Nuffield) and Greens (now Nuffield), David Lloyds and Living Well by clicking on the links 🙂 This time Scott and I only visited one and as business relocations go I have to say it all went amazingly smoothly! 🙂 We simply strolled across North Bridge and spoke with the lovely Euan Higgins the assistant manager, came back the next day and spoke with Mike ‘Wonderful’ Webb the Manager and happily found ourselves part of the team! 🙂
The Gym Team!
The best thing about The Gym is the team. Yes, even better than the toys! Euan and Mike are great managers and my fellow PT’s – Mikey, Alan, Drew, Andy, Guss, Adam and Lewis aka The Twins, Sara, Victoria, Brad, Doug and Hajni are a wonderful bunch. Without exception everyone has been incredibly friendly, welcoming and helpful which makes for a fun and vibrant working atmosphere! 🙂
As you’d expect The Gym is well stocked with toys! There’s everything you’d expect – lots of free weights and dumbbells, masses of Matrix kit – the seated converging row machine is my favourite! In the interests of objectivity I have to say that the designers at Matrix have some room for improvement though. The Leg Press is a bit pants for example. I use it with my clients and Scott’s legs are growing steadily from the horrific workouts he’s doing using it but it could be improved. Some plate loading kit like the pieces at Pure Gym at Quatermile would be a welcome addition too but I’m happy to say they’re coming at the end of the year when we get a refurb! 🙂 Heavier dumbbells are on their way too, not that I need them myself! 🙂
I’ve never worked in a big commercial gym before and I have to say that I had a few preconceived ideas that were totally wrong! I thought that there might be a lack of community – WRONG! That it would be too busy at peak times – WRONG! That the members would be too busy talking to train – WRONG! That taking classes would be crap – WRONG!
There is a great sense of community amongst the regular members here. People are generally friendly and chatty and only too happy to share kit and help one another out. As a result even at peak times it’s pretty easy to train! I’ve taken my first classes and I’m shocked to say I’ve enjoyed myself! 🙂 I’ve even had a go at step aerobics – thanks Hajni! 🙂
I’ve been delighted to bump into a whole host of familiar faces from The Scotsman, Factory Gyms and Spartan Gym here too! 🙂 And this is my job! Work doesn’t get any better! 😀
Location, Location, Location!
The Gym Edinburgh City is located, unsurprisingly, smack bang in the centre on Edinburgh, 2 minutes, literally, from Waverley Station. How good is that? 🙂 I’m delighted that I’m lucky enough to have found a new home that is so central, again! 🙂 The view from the roof is pretty good too! 🙂
