This time I headed off to The Roseleaf with Angela ‘Mogwai’ Miller. I’ve known Angela for years now; we met many moons ago at Factory Gyms and have stayed in touch ever since. We blathered so much I totally forgot to take any pics so I had to steal the ones here! 🙂 As well as being a Mogwai Angela is quite an active girl to say the least as you’ll find if you read on! 🙂

Who Are You and Why Are You Here?

I am Angela Miller and I am here because Matt said the magic words “food” and “shambolic chat”

What Does Your Current Training Program Look Like?

I train daily at Mission Training Systems which is a Crossfit box. We do some kind of strength work, technique drilling or gymnastic skills followed by a WOD (workout of the day) which changes daily and is never boring, but it is generally some kind of metcon combining lifting, cardio, gymnastics and body weight movements.

I rarely have proper rest days as I feel I stiffen up and get a lot sorer when I do. I do active recovery instead and will go for a gentle run, do some yoga or sometimes a ballet barre class to stretch off.

I love Olympic weightlifting. It takes years and years of practice to get even remotely good, there are so many small parts to put together to make a whole. Even getting one of these small components slightly wrong can result in an ugly lift, or a failed lift. Technique is everything and it’s fun to geek out and take your lifts apart.

I really enjoy all kinds of training and trying new things. From scrambling along rocks and jumping off cliffs to power kiting, I’ll get involved! I think trying everything is the key to finding something you like and will stick to . I hear so many people say they don’t exercise because they find it boring – I think there’s something out there for everyone, you just have to take the time to find it! Get out there and experiment, there are so many options and there are no excuses for being lazy.

What Does Your Current Nutritional Program Look Like?

I was focusing on building some muscle, but now I’m looking to lean out a little just because I’m going on holiday soon as don’t want to look a fat mess in my swimwear 😀 I am following Renaissance Periodization which essentially is just portioning carbs, proteins and fats as you would expect.

Eat clean and take in less food than you burn off is the bottom line really if you want to lose weight.

As a “normal” person I don’t think you should feel guilty about having treats every now and again. I don’t believe in cheat days, because using that phrase psychologically brings feelings of guilt about breaking your diet. To be honest I don’t believe in diets, I believe in a healthy lifestyle where you can enjoy a little bit of what you enjoy as long as it’s not excessive. I don’t think diets are necessarily sustainable long term, healthy living is and is much easier to stick to. Life is no fun when you are constantly restricting yourself.

My favourite foods are peanut butter and bacon; I love coffee! I never drink fizzy drinks and I avoid all gluten containing foods due to being a mogwai 😀 I have coeliac disease, which restricts my diet, but not as much as people think.

What’s More Important, Diet or Exercise?Lyn-Jonny-Kane-Roseleaf-Bar-Cafe_pub_food

What you eat has a massive impact if you want to lose fat, the old phrase “abs start in the kitchen” definitely has truth to it.

If you’re not bothered about being lean AF, then eat what you want and do the exercise you enjoy – just don’t be surprised when you don’t look shredded like that chick down the gym with the insane abs, because I guarantee she’s training mega hard, meal prepping like a mofo and counting her macros like a damn ninja.

What Did You Think Of The Food?

It was awesome thank you! Pulled spicy chicken, chips and mayonnaise, a wee salad and a good catch up. What’s not to like 🙂

Matt here! – The Roseleaf is my favourite place to eat and drink in Edinburgh. I’ve been going there for 8 years now and the place never fails to delight me! The food is great and the menu changes regularly, the service is fab and the atmosphere is relaxed, warm and welcoming. If you’ve not been here you most definitely should! 🙂

Over and Out! 🙂
