The Edinburgh Food Porn Interviews – Sandy Forsyth Fitness :o)

Filthy Food Porn Excesses at El Cartel with Edinburgh Personal Trainer Matt Lazenby, Sweet Potato Taco Lover and Inconsistent Blogger! :o)

After much delay aka glitches in the matrix the first of The Food Porn Interviews is finally here 🙂 Those of you who have no idea what on earth I’m on about had better go and read The Edinburgh Food Porn Interviews – Me :o)

Destination El Cartel!

IMG_3955I headed off to El Cartel for sweet potato tacos with Sandy Forsyth of Forsyth Fitness. I met Sandy at The Scotsman Spa and thought he would be an interesting chap to go out for a bite with as he comes from a boxing background. He’s also an all round excellent chap and avid GoT watcher! 🙂

Who Are You and Why Are You Here? 😀

My name is Sandy Forsyth, I’m a personal trainer based in Edinburgh. I have been personal training for 4 years and I love that I can use my knowledge and skills to help real people with busy lives utilise training in the most optimal manner in order to get results, learn about nutrition and also understand that training can be fun and exciting. I work alongside my very handsome host and I’m here because I love Mexican food and great company (he’s paying so I’ll need to lay it on thick!)

What’s your background?

Sandy!I began boxing at the age of 9 and boxed for 10 years at the Leith Victoria A.A.C, winning both national and international titles along the way. I learned a lot through boxing and was always fascinated by technique and studying the way people move in order to maximise performance. These are traits I still use today in order to assess my clients in both strength based and boxing training. When my boxing career ended I studied to become a personal trainer and last year was lucky enough to undertake a strength and conditioning internship with the Toronto Blue Jay’s performance programme.

What does your current training programme look like?

I’m currently training to improve my back squat, I’ve always felt discomfort getting to depth. So lots of mobility and a tonne of foam rolling! Not exactly the most exciting phase but when it helps performance it’s definitely worth it.

Any training related thoughts you’d care to share?

IMG_3959Be adventurous, ask questions, try new exercises, learn and above all have fun!
I see too many people who are miserable in the gym because they are afraid of asking questions and spend most of the time worried about who’s staring at them or that they’ll make a fool of themselves. They ultimately give up and leave what could have been a very positive experience for them. I would encourage every new trainee to have an induction or get a trainer because it can be extremely rewarding. You’ll learn a lot and develop confidence in an environment you would’ve normally shied away from.

What does your current nutritional programme look like?

Mostly nutrient dense foods with the odd treat here and there (like today :D). I’m happy at the moment sitting around maintenance kcals. I’ll adjust this accordingly when my training intensity requires it but for the moment I’m happy just eating portions that are both tasty and filling without tracking too much.

Any nutritional related thoughts you’d care to share?

IMG_3960My emphasis on nutrition is taste, colour and texture! You want to be excited by meals not dreading them. I like to teach my clients how to get into the kitchen and prepare healthy, exciting meals that don’t take forever to prepare and will allow them to stay consistent and reach their goals. I also have a big emphasis on preparing meals not grabbing convenience food like products because it takes less effort.

What’s more important diet or exercise?

It really depends on your goals e.g. Fat loss = diet, Hypertrophy = training and diet
It’s important to have a basic understanding of both in order to see results.

What Did You Think Of The Food at El Cartel?

IMG_3962This is Matt again! In short Sandy and I thought the food in el Cartel was amazing!

Guided by our excellent hostess Sandy and I ordered 4 dishes – Sweet Potato Taco’s, Duck Carnitas Taco’s, Quesadillas and Pork Ribs. To say that they were all excellent is something of an understatement! We were so happy after our meal that we started on the frozen margaritas and then ordered more food in the form of Chicken Wings because the ones on the next table looked so good! I think this tells you everything you need to know about how great we thought everything was! 😀

The restaurant itself had a great atmosphere and the service was excellent; the waitress was knowledgable and friendly and we both had a thoroughly enjoyable time! I think it’s safe to say we’ll both be back!

Get Involved!

All being well the shambolic wonder that is Angela Miller, crossfitter and Mogwai should be up next but this still leaves me with plenty more restaurants to visit so if you think you’re interesting enough for my blog and fancy grabbing a bite to eat with me or know anyone else who you think might be contact me and let me know! 🙂
