How to get exactly what you want in 2012 :o)

With only 75 days left this year I thought that this would be a great time to get a head start on your goal setting for 2012 by revisiting my first ever blog post from 2011 :) Without further ado here’s how to get exactly what you want in 2012 :)

This is really simple; just follow the three steps below -

  • Define, clearly and concisely, exactly what you want
  • Make a plan
  • Follow the plan

There you go, it’s that simple. Please note here that I said simple, not easy :)

You now have two choices – go and start work on getting exactly what you want right away or stick around for some more information on the three steps and, more importantly, how to apply them.

The first step is to define, clearly and concisely, exactly what it is you want. The single biggest reason for people failing to achieve their goals is quite simply not deciding what they are in the first place!

Some of you will know right away exactly what you want. For others of you it may take a little while to decide, but the more effort you put into this the easier the whole process will be and this will greatly improve your chances of success :)

You also need to consider why you want it. Your ‘why’ should motivate and inspire you. Your ‘why’ is what will drive you through the journey ahead. When you feel like quitting, and you will, it is your ‘why’ that will get you through.

“He who has a strong enough why can bear almost any ‘how’.”Nietzsche

Write everything down on paper, it will greatly improve your chances of success. When you write down your goals state them in positive, personal terms and in the present tense – this may sound strange, but it works :)

Visualize how you will look and feel when you achieved your goal and how it will affect everything and everyone around you. Again this may sound strange, but it works :)

Remember what I said earlier? Getting exactly what you want is simple, but that doesn’t mean it is easy. It requires desire, commitment and consistent focus so anything that makes the process easier has to be worth implementing.

Once you’ve settled on what it is you want you’ll need to find a way to measure your success. If your goal is specific enough then this is usually easy to do – if you want to lose 20lbs then you’ll be measuring your success by getting weighed for example.

Finally you need to set yourself a realistic time frame for achieving your goals – deadlines are motivating :) Three months is a perfect time frame to work with, it’s long enough to completely transform your body, but near enough to create a sense of urgency.

If you’re uncertain about how to measure your success or if your time frame, or even your goal, is realistic this then get some help. Ask a friend or enlist the services of a professional, like me :) The golden rule here is that any help you receive is impartial, trustworthy and brutally honest :) My personal training clients will testify that I am in possession of all three of these qualities :)

You should now have clear, concise and specific written goals that are exciting, realistic and measurable. You’ll also know exactly why you want to achieve them. If you’ve not done this yet then you’ve got something to keep you busy for a while :)

The next step is to plan exactly how you are going to achieve them. For more on how to do this check out the next post, which, all being well, will be up over the next few days :)

Update – I’m going to repost the next post in exactly a weeks time :)
