Great article and nice insight into the life of a personal trainer.

I would be really interested in reading more on the new nutritional program you created for TC so yes, put my name down for one of the ten. :)

Cheers

Thanks Drew, hope you are still enjoying yourself down at Pure :) Scotsman is now not only classy but incredibly well-equipped with 2 power racks, 2 lifting platforms, dumbbells up to 50k and plenty of other goodies :)

Excellent reviews Matt and Kyle. Greens seems like a good gym but a little too far for me to travel from Leith.

David Lloyds would probably be my favorite gym to join from all the ones you and Kyle have reviewed but the price is a little too high for what I would be using it for. I was a member of this gym for about two years when it was owned by Next Generation and I couldnt fault the gym in anyway at all, although (might have changed now) it was a rather long hike from the changingroom to the actual gym area if they locked the door to the hot-tub area to stop people cutting through!!

Great views from the treadmills over to Fife and they did have a great wee sports shop downstairs and ample parking too. I only left because I was only using it about twice a week and was paying around £60 per month although this package got me onto the racket area and full use of the little 5-aside area outside.

I did pop along to Pure Gym at the OT (seen Tony :) ) and had a look around and to be honest they had everything I was looking for and the price is great although I was hopping a christmas deal on the membership fee!! ):
____________

BTW I asked Tony.. "Can cardiovascular exercise prolong life....Is this true?"

Tony..."Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it… don’t waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap" ;)

I've been studying Lean production techniques recently and I love the idea of The Toyota Way.

They're obsessed with doing what they do:
As efficiently as possible
Removing anything wasteful from the process
Taking time to reflect on how things are working

I immediately thought:
What about the Lazenby way? The same principles but applied to training.
I'd buy that book!

Gutted to hear about Factory. I'd still be there if I hadn't moved jobs.

I'm at Pure next to the meadows and my choice was based on 2 things:
1. It's right next to my flat
2. It's cheap

You're right about peak times. It's almost impossible to get near the free weights on an evening.
I usually go about 9pm to avoid the long rush hour. :-)

Pros:
Cheap
Decent kit
24 hour opening
Hot students by the thousand

Cons:
No one puts the ruddy weights back
The turnstyles to get in are a bit tight (they obviously don't like fat folk - I may complain)
Gangsters
The dumb bells only go up to 30kg
There are no 20kg bars... (<em>Are you sure? There were at least 2 when I was last there - Matt</em>)
When I asked if they had a trap bar (and described it) the PT just looked confused.

If it wasn't cheap I'd probably just leave.

I'd love to see Factory move in and replace them.

Matt, if you're round there training on an evening let me know!

Matt / Kyle

Thanks for this review, it's really helpful. It would be useful to get an idea of how busy these places are at different times of the day. I went to look at Pure Gym at Ocean Terminal about midday and it was really quiet. At 7.00 pm it was absolutely heaving. Whilst it has loads of cardio kit, the majority was being used and the free weight area was bursting at the seams, with people hanging around waiting to use kit. For me, if I have to wait to use kit I tend to pack up and leave as I like to just get on with my training. I don't know what that says about my motivation but how busy a gym is at the time I like to use it is very important to me. Conversely, I don't want it to be completely empty as seeing others working out is also motivational, and I don't want to be alone when Jack Nicholson walks in with a chopping axe!

I'm currently a member of Factory Gyms and really disappointed that it's closing. In the past I've been a member of two of the gyms reviewed here - Scotsman and the CSE (before it's refurb and extension). Both are decent, but neither have the same feel as Factory.

Scotsman Pro's
 * small and friendly gym keeps a bit of the atmosphere
 * the pool and spa area is incredible
 * decent enough selection of free weights
 * excellent pilates instructor

Scotsman Con's
 * The price
 * No squat rack

CSE Pro's
 * The price
 * Variety of equipment
 * Squash courts

CSE Con's
 * Always busy
 * A bit of a labryinth
 * Impersonal

Really interesting read this and great for people like me who will (unfortunately) be looking for a new gym to join once Factory's closes. :(

Reading through the gym reviews by Matt I personally will probably join the Pure Gym at the Ocean Terminal. The reasons being the price, 10 Min's from where I stay and it seems to have a good range of Cardio equipment and some wights too!! I will take a look at some of the other gyms Matt and Kyle have reviewed but if I'm being honest for someone like me Pure Gym will probably suit myself best.

Although it could also depend on what gym has the best looking talent (female of course!!) ;) I can easily burn 500 calories by just watching a lovely bird in tight Lycra!! :) :)

I usually train around late afternoon just because of my shifts and it tends to be quieter around this time although I don't mind training in peak times too!! Well after reading this review on the various gyms I suppose it's time to go out and check some of them out. One thing is for sure, I don't think any of the gyms will have as friendly staff as the ones at Factory, they really do add to the experience of going to the gym.

I wish Matt and Kyle and all the rest of the staff at Factory gyms the very best for the future!!
